Dropbox icon is not working Xubuntu 16.04 LTS

By | April 21, 2016

After upgrading to Xubuntu 16.04, I found that the dropbox icon stopped working. The icon is black with a red slashed zero. I cannot click on it to bring up the dropbox menu.

The reason is that Dropbox starts to use “indicator area” for their tray icon instead of “notification area”. The problem can be fixed by running

$ dropbox stop && DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS="" dropbox start

$ dropbox stop && dbus-launch dropbox start

    Is there a way to make this permanent (aside from automatically running it each time after login)?

      In your session/startup section under settings, edit the dropbox entry with “dbus-launch dropbox start” without the quotes.

    The problem is that dropbox automatically re-sets the command to “drobbox start -i”. I also tried to change the dropbox settings to manual start and then add a custom startup entry using the dbus-launch command but it did not work (still starting dropbox without the right icon)

    Thaks Yifan Peng!!
    Compelementing, I solved the autostart problem with these steps:

    ● alter the autostart command to what Yifan Peng said (without stop command):

    $ mousepad ~/.config/autostart/dropbox.desktop
    change the item "Exec=dropbox start -i" to Exec=dbus-launch dropbox start

    ● save and close the file;

    ● change the file’s owner to root (this will prevent Dropbox from altering or deleting the file on shutdown and it wont be able to create a new one with the same name):

    $ cd ~/.config/autostart/
    $ sudo chown root.root dropbox.desktop
